Review: Mexico City, AKA DF/Ciudad de Mexico

Mexico City???

If you tell people you plan to visit Mexico City, they might question your choice due to its reputation which follows other cities like Bogota around as well.

First off, Mexico City is the largest and most economically important city in Mexico, it is also the capital of Mexico. By some measures its the largest city in the world, usually its in the top 3 by most standards.

As the Capital and largest city of Mexico , it encompasses many aspects of Mexico from its European aspects to the indigenous peoples of Mexico.

There is an image of Mexico City that is a massive, poverty stricken, crime ridden city. Yes, there are poor people, street crime and pollution and they can be right in your face. Its a massive city after all, but will these things impact your trip to the degree its not worth to go?

If you have asthma, I'd would check the weather and with your doctor on the conditions for Mexico City, some times of the year are much worse then others. Otherwise, I say go and use normal precautions.

Highlights?
The Architecture is amazing: In Mexico City you have one of the oldest cities in the America's by European or Indigenous people's, before Spain established it as their new world Capital, it was the Capital of the Aztecs and both histories can be seen nearby each other today.

Teotihuacan is an amazing ancient complex of pyramids that should not be missed. Built along a long ancient avenue, you can imagine the scale of this place in its day.

Mexico city is bursting with architecture from its many waves of growth an immigration.

The People
Mexico city people are a busy group, the DF is busy, fast paced and over populated but side walk taco stands and the amount of cafes still show that DF people love to enjoy their slow time and talk.

Most people are mestizo's but Mexico city is a very diverse city. There are Europeans of Spanish descent, Eastern Europeans, Jews from Europe and the middle east, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Lebanese and more.

Next time, Mexico city's cool neighborhoods.....

Where not to go?
I would not go to Tepito, either would many Mexicans, the areas around the airport and east of the airport are also not really great places.

When to go?
Anytime, the weather is very mild year round due to the latitude and high altitude. Some people might have breathing issues the first day or two from the elevation or smog levels.

When did I go?
I have visited the DF about 5 times in the last 1.5 years and strongly have considered moving to the DF one of these days.
